An effective practice plan keeps players engaged, minimizes standing around, and logically progresses from individual skills to team systems.
Sample 120-Minute Block
- 0:00 – 0:15 (Warm-Up & Ball Control): Dynamic stretching followed by partner pepper or specific ball-control progressions (e.g., short-deep passing, setting triangles).
- 0:15 – 0:35 (Individual Skill Focus): Break down a specific skill (e.g., attacking approach footwork or blocking penetration). High reps, instant feedback.
- 0:35 – 0:55 (Positional Split): Hitters and setters work together on tempo and connections. Liberos and defensive specialists work on serve receive and digging on a separate court.
- 0:55 – 1:15 (Combined Drill / Small-Sided Games): Combine the skills. 3v3 or 4v4 wash drills that emphasize the skill focused on earlier (e.g., out-of-system attacking).
- 1:15 – 1:45 (6v6 Wash Games/System Play): Put it into a game-like context. Control the variables (e.g., free ball initiation, serve receive initiation) to force specific situations.
- 1:45 – 2:00 (Serving & Passing Pressure): End practice with high-pressure serving and passing games. Example: Servers must hit specific zones while passers must achieve a passing target score before practice ends.
